Oh-kay, so... like, I didn't get to gozz you on the, well, gozz! Remember this post? Well, I did say I had some juicy stuff to share, but things've been happening... and.. and.. aaaaand... happening!! *cackle*

So, we've all been working at varying degrees of hardness *kaff!* and Nick's music is like. So. HARD! (It's also beautiful on top of being complex, but don't tell him I said that... then he'd be impossible to live with, tsk!)

Aaaaanyways, some of us had some problems keeping up, and wow. Nick. Had. A. COW! It was awesome! I was impressed! It was a masterful display of... well, whatever you call what maestros display masterfully :D

In productions, there's a lot of drama going on off-stage as well as on. Believe me when I say that the drama is part of the thrill of performing and putting up a show. Not all drama can be bad. Sadly, the opposite can also be true (although that wasn't the case this time).

In this case, I think poor Nick was stressed about us not getting things perfectly right at the eleventh hour! But you know what? We needed that display of whatchamawhatsits. And we've only gotten better and betterer since. Yeah :) Well, I think we've gotten betterer and bettererer! The band is awesome, and the past week has been spent in PJLA's Studio on level 2 bashing out notes, and basically getting everything together. The beats are so catchy, and the orchestration is fun and upbeat.

It's been such an AWESOME journey so far, with Nick's great way of story-telling making the whole thing enjoyable for the cast and crew.

There's an awesome (there's that word again...hmmm..) rap section that the Wise Guys have, and that portion has only gotten better and more entertaining since they first started performing it 2 months ago.

Oh!!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh ohhhhh!

OHHHHHH!!!! *bounces excitedly!!*

Today, I did a ba-a-a-a-a-a-aaaaad thing! Well, not just today. But today I was worse than usual! I whipped out my hipstamatic and took pictures of the cast and band and production team while Colin was giving us our notes. Here's a teaser! You can find the rest here!

The Shepherd Sistahs, camwhoring like
they've got no shame... (it's true, they don't! :D)

Colin and Judi giving notes. Down to 1.33 pages, woot!
The REAL Juwita, not the angelic Mary ;)
(I kid, she's disgustingly angelic off stage too :(.... )

Angels: Song-Fan, and Anrie. Disgustingly sexy ppl. Pfft!
Wise guys giving Liang a... hmm... *censored to preserve PG rating*

Some random immigrant we found....

Nick Choo giving notes. Scary!

As you can see, we're having a ton of fun putting this show together. Now, go get your tickets and come watch us, dammit!! We'll knock your socks off — that's a promise!

Okay, I'd better log off before Nick discovers I've posted this up without his OK. Eeeeehehehehe >:)

Rockin' Their Look!

Here's a sneak-peek at the cast (with director Colin) donning costumes by our award-winning designer Dominique Devorsine! Did we not say we're gonna be a fun show? We're gonna be a fun show!! Come on, who'd want to miss this lot?? Get yer tickets today, y'hear?! :P

A Special Gift

Here's our wonderful Mary, Juwita Suwito, performing another demo from Follow The Light: a tender love ballad to her newborn baby boy. This is a simplified version of the song with just a piano accompaniment — the stage version will be rather different. Come and watch the show to find out how it's going to sound! And please don't forget to check out the Songs link above for more demos. :)

Now it's a breeze to purchase your student/seniors/disabled discounted tickets (RM55)!

After some feedback from friends, we have requested PJLA Box Office to make the following changes to their normal system, just for "Follow The Light", in order to simplify the purchase of the above discounted tickets.

1. Students/seniors/disabled now do NOT have to show proof of status when purchasing their discounted tickets. Tickets will instead be checked on entry to the performance, and discounted ticket holders may be requested to show proof of status (student card, IC, OKU card) and may be asked to pay full ticket price if unable to prove status.

2. Apart from walk-in purchases, students/seniors/disabled can also now purchase their discounted tickets via telephone and online. On PJLA's online booking system, select "FTL 55 (Child/SC/Stu/OKU Only)" as your ticket option. You will of course need to pay by credit card if purchasing by telephone or online.

THE STORY

ACT ONE The Angels introduce the journey that we are about to embark upon (The Most Curious Story/Overture). The suave Angel Gabe tells Mary, a pious young woman, that she is about to conceive a child through miraculous means (Soon You'll Have A Baby). Mary reacts with apprehension, worried about her own plans for the future (Before I Turn Sixteen). In the end, she decides to go ahead with the Angel's plan (Be It Unto Me).

Meanwhile, Mary's fiance Joe has just heard the news (What Will The People Say?). With some coaxing from Gabe and Mary (Forevermore), he and Mary reconcile... for now (Soon We'll Have A Baby).

Not too far away, some Shepherds are bored of their routine of watching sheep (More To Life Than This). Pertinently, the young shepherd boy Marvin wishes that his big bully sisters would stop pushing him around (Lost Sheep). But more on this later...

Back with Mary and Joe, who make their way towards Joe's hometown (Bethlehem). But Mary goes into labour, and they desperately try to find a place to spend the night (Another Motel Down The Road). Having no choice, they settle down in a stable (The Manger). Suddenly there's a bright light from the sky...

...A light which the Shepherds see, and they react with joy for something has broken the monotony of life (Something New, Something Bright). Gabe appears and tell them not just to observe the star, but to tail it. Elsewhere, three best friends make their appearance, believing that the star is a sign of greater things to come. Guided by the star, Gabe, and the foursome of Angels, the trio and the Shepherds set off on their journey towards their mysterious destination (Follow The Light).

ACT TWO The Angels bring us back to the story, informing us that the events that are about to unfold will be Something Big. Meanwhile, each group of characters has their own definition of what "something big" will be... which leads to conflict between Mary and Joe (What In Heaven Could Be Stranger?) and the Shepherds (No Longer A Child).

The trio of best friends re-emerge, and they argue on who among them will benefit from the riches that the star surely represents (Glory). Cue the appearance of Gabe, who tells them that it's not about them (Great Denial). Chastised, the trio finally become Wise Men and set off on their way (Follow The Light Reprise / Something Big Reprise).

Back in the stable, Mary and Joe reconcile (Beautiful Child). The Shepherds and the Wise Men suddenly realise that they shouldn't go to the stable empty-handed. They debate on what to bring the child (Burden on their Minds). The Wise Men run into Gabe, who advises them (Three Gifts).

At long last, the Shepherds and the Wise Men arrive at the scene, where they are greeted by Joe, Mary and the baby (Adoration). Gabe and the Angels take this moment to remind us of what this story is about, and what it will become (They'll Call It Christmastime). The show concludes with the rousing Finale.

Integral Integration

Hey everyone! As of this week we've moved our rehearsals into the studio above the theatre in PJ Live Arts, and we've incorporated the band with the cast. Whoo-hooo! This is an exciting and challenging part of the process, where sometimes the limitations of a physical space can cause acoustic problems that hinder the fluidity of the process; but we've done full runs, integrated, and I, as musical director, am still working with the band to tighten and fine-tune the songs... so I dare say we're almost there!! And not a moment too soon - only about a week to go till opening night, and we're really excited and nervous and thrilled and stressed out and psyched and terrified to be presenting our show for all of you out there! So make sure you get your tickets and come see us in action, okay?? OKAY!!

In the meantime, here are a couple of shots of the band, taken by our official photographer Bernard Goh (cheers, Bernard!) of Creative Clicks. On a personal note, I love these shots as I think we look like the cast of a sitcom about a bunch of rocker wannabes, arf arf!! (Meanwhile, how do you make a bandstand? Take away their chairs. GROAAAN.) Okay, check these pics out, and click on 'em for bigger views! Also scroll down to check out more rehearsal pics below, okay?? OKAY!!

A view from the top...

Much of what we’ve been sharing on this blog concerns our rehearsal process, but some of you may not be aware that Nick and I are actually also producing this show, apart from working on the creative aspects of the show.

What does that involve? LOTS!!

In the past three weeks, we’ve had to work on a whole bunch of different things, multitasking like mad! These involve discussions with PJLA, our performance venue, to decide on logistic issues, box office issues, how we are going to price the show, mapping out the seating plan for the tiered prices, etc, etc.

We’ve also had to liaise with corporates who are contributing to the show, either financially or in kind: Where does their branding go? What perks will they be entitled to? And so on.

Then there are the set, lighting, sound and costume aspects of the production. We’ve been in further discussion to make some tweaks to the design of the set, with our award-nominated set designer Fang Chyi. Plus settling some preliminary lighting issues with Ee Chee Wei, our multi-award-winning lighting designer.

We had a meeting, too, with yet another multi-award-winning designer, our costume whiz Dominique Devorsine, to discuss further some of the concepts she wanted to show us for the costumes. The only brief I had given to her was, “Even though the original story is set in first century Palestine, I want the costumes to be historically and geographically ambiguous to indicate that it’s a timeless story. Plus, it’s a fun show, so we want that element reflected somewhat in the costumes too.” Dominique has come up with some very interesting ideas, and we’re looking forward to see how it all fleshes out in the end. Chee Wei, of course, needs to know in advance what sort of fabric textures and colours will be used, as well as the layout and colours and textures of the set, as it will affect his lighting design.

We also had to make some important decisions in the sound department – what equipment would be needed to be rented for our venue, and how much it would cost, and who would be given the job of engineering our sound. This is such a key element in the production. No one enjoys watching a musical where poor sound kills everything!

After over a month of working with our publicity designer, Davina Chan (who’s done an amazing job, I think, based on feedback we’ve been getting), we were also able to settle the final designs for the flyers, posters, buntings and banners, and then liaise with our printer to get the publicity materials ready. After collecting the finished products, Nick and I sat down with our publicist, Grace Chin, to work out where all the materials were going to be sent to for maximum reach and impact. We also wrote up a press release and collated bios of the cast and creative team for press and media purposes, and worked again with our publicist to see how the show could be best promoted through the press, media and online avenues.

Of course, in the midst of all this, rehearsals couldn’t let up. The bulk of rehearsals in the past few weeks have been in my hands and have focused on blocking and acting (with Nick backing up on playing the music), but Judy has also had to arrange separate choreography rehearsals for some of the cast who are needing the additional tuition, as has Nick in the vocal department.

One of the biggest challenges in mounting this production has been the almost mutually exclusive schedules of the cast members. Some work nights and weekends while others work normal 9-5 days. Still others freelance and have odd hours depending on what projects are happening. Piecing together a rehearsal schedule has been a nightmare, complicated further by personal emergencies and illness that have cropped up along the way. Of course we knew from the start that scheduling was going to be a major challenge. But it still doesn’t make it any easier!

So we have very much been working with sub-groups and then trying to piece the jigsaw pieces together: The Shepherds have been working on their scenes separately. Ditto for the Wise Men. Mary, Joe and Gabe have many of their scenes together, while the angels flit in through different scenes as the storytellers gelling it all together. Rehearsals have been happening almost every day at all conceivable hours of the day, depending on performers’ availability. I don’t think I’ve ever had to work on a production with such a crazy work schedule!

Apart from the obvious problem of overcoming fragmentation, another key problem with such an arrangement is that it doesn’t help towards building ensemble, which is so needed for company pieces, and for the production as a whole. Some cast members had hardly seen each other since the start of rehearsals, and were still trying to remember each other’s names! So one of our priorities in the past couple of weeks has been to build ensemble – teamwork, trust, chemistry – within the whole company. Judy and I spent some time running exercises and playing games with the entire cast, and I’m glad to see we’re slowly but surely getting there.

Another challenge I face as director is that I have a very wide range of experience in my cast. I have singers with amazing vocals who have little musical theatre experience, and singing musical theatre is very different from singing in a concert! I also have experienced musical theatre practitioners who are proficient in their stage work. So I’ve had to go through some of the basics of theatre craft with the newbies as rehearsals have developed, whilst others have had to be patient with the newcomers and try their best to contribute to their growth. The challenge with established performers, on the other hand, is sometimes getting them out of their comfort zones. So overall, the goal for Nick, Judy and me has been to stretch our performers, both new and experienced, beyond what they think they are capable of (in acting, singing or dance), without overwhelming or discouraging them – and all in record time!

In the midst of all this, Nick has also been assembling the band, writing out music scores and working with them on band rehearsals. I have yet to meet some of the band members, but I know Nick has put together a really fine bunch of musicians who are going to add their own magic to the show! Apart from Nick on keyboards, we’ll also have Justin Depuydt (Elaine Toon) on keyboards too (two? LOL), Wei-Ming Wong and Isaac Ravi on guitars, Joe Loy (Kevin Theseira) on bass, and Ryan Lee Bhaskaran on drums. (Elaine and Kevin are backup musicians for show-days when Justin and Joe will be absent.)

All in all, Nick and I are pretty much sleep-deprived and exhausted, but glad to see things slowly take shape. The next two weeks till we open are going to be even more intense, but we’re convinced the end result is going to be one great show that bears testament to all the creative inputs of the amazingly talented group of people we’re honoured to work with, and which you’re gonna love to bits.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your tickets!

And meanwhile, I’m gonna grab some much-needed sleep. :)

A clarification and apology

We have just discovered in communicating with PJLA Box Office that they were under the impression that students/seniors/disabled could only purchase limited-view seating normally sold to everyone at RM55.

This is NOT the case.

Students/seniors/disabled can purchase ANY seat in the hall at the discounted rate of RM55. (The exception is of course the preview show on 2 December, where all seats are at a flat rate of RM35 for everyone.)

Those of you who have encountered this problem when making your booking, could you please contact PJLA Box Office with details of your purchase and they will refund you the extra RM20 charged.

PJLA Box Office extends their apologies, as do we, for this miscommunication and the inconvenience arising to those of you who have been affected by it.

Blast From the Past #3: Accolades

Back when we did FTL in 2005, we scored nominations in the 2005 Finley Awards - which are hosted annually by Western Australia's Independent Theatre Association and are akin to Malaysia's [former?] Boh Cameronian Arts Awards - for Best Lead Actor (our performer who played Gabe), Best Lead Actress (Mary), Best Musical Director (yours truly) and Best Musical. Of these, we proudly won second place for Best Musical (under our then director's production company Cat Productions), as well as a special award that didn't fall into any of the above categories. Check 'em out:

We hope that our new and improved version of FTL will - as it did five years ago - capture the hearts of critics, aficionados, casual theatre-goers and theatre virgins alike. So come and check it out, everybody!! Tickets are on sale now! :)

9/8 + 2/4 + 9/8 + 3/4

Hey all! Nick's back, having taken the blog back from Bathsheba (see previous post!)! At the risk of disappointing everyone after the awesome demo by Juwita (see Songs link at the top of the page — by the way, how is everyone liking the new design and layout of this site??), here's another rough audio clip, this time of our rehearsal with the band earlier this afternoon. This is us running through, for the first time, the most rhythmically complex song in the show, Before I Turn Sixteen.

Forgive the less-than-optimal audio quality as it's just a microphone in the middle of the room, plugged into the computer... and everyone's instruments were just "raw", plugged into individual tiny amps. When it comes to the actual show, we can almost promise that it'll sound at least marginally better :P ...not to mention we'll be using an electronic drum kit for greater control over the level of the drums! Whoohoo!! But for now, here's yet another hint of what's to come during the show... give or take a keyboard, proper mixing and mastering, and someone who can actually sing. Arf. Hope you enjoy!

Follow The Moose.....!!!!!

Hiyeeee!!

Okay, Zalina here (a.k.a. Bathsheba). Quick, while Nick's not looking!
.
.
.
.
.

Oh-Em-Gee! I popped over to this very blog yesterday and saw Nick had posted up Ju(wita)'s recording of Be It Unto Me... It is... so... awesome! A-W-E-S-O-M-E! I just had to share it with a couple of friends on GTalk. Seriously, if you haven't heard it yet, check it out here!

Anyhoo!

I'm here to tell you about the rehearsal process... from my *cough*unbiased*cough* point of view. Heeee :D

So, okay! I'm part of a trio of shepherds who are pretty, well, unchallenged by life. And me and my sis, Zemira (that's played by Rydee) have this "little" brother called Marvin (played by Adrien). Marv gets picked on a lot. I mean, seriously picked on :) It's kinda fun picking on someone and not getting punished for it. I'm not sure how Adrien feels about it, but I can honestly say I'm having a good time ;)

Anyway, getting ahead of myself there. Bathsheba is... let's just come out and say it shall we? She's a bully! Which makes me wonder if that's how Nick perceives me, seeing as how he claims he wrote my character in specifically for me :p

*Self edit: Do I bully you, Neek?? I'm sorrrrryyyyyyy!! *hugsh*

Colin had a sesh with the shepherds last Monday. We have certain sessions at the multipurpose hall of Nick's apartment. It's kinda hot since the room has only 3 fans in one corner — which is the corner we never use — and absolutely no air conditioning whatsoever!

HOWEVAR!

In spite of the heat, Colin's very patient with us. I've got this case of (approximate?) ADHD and tend to walk in circles and faff about, and when it gets hot, I get worse! But Colin's great, and he only gave me ONE lecture on focusing (which is a RECORD for me m'kay?!). It's really great to be working for Colin, and Nick, and Judi on this one cuz they're un-buh-leee-vably patient with all of us. Well, Colin does tend to nag us. But hu-llo!! He's Herr Direktor! He could be worse, but he isn't, so it's all cool :D

Okay, no more going on about the directors. They're not even paying me to suck up. Lets get to the juice! *cackles evilly*

Actually... oh, no! Nick's on IM asking me uncomfortable questions. I don't think he's realized I've hijacked his blog. I'm going to log off here, but STAY TUNED! I definitely plan on hijacking this blog again.

I haven't even gotten to the good parts yet... :(

Okie, bye-eeeeeeeee!!!!!

Presenting: Be It Unto Me

At long last, boys and girls, after months of putting up bits and pieces of music as well as random blasts from the past, here's a brand new demo featuring our very own Mary, the awesome Juwita Suwito!! This song, Be It Unto Me, happens early on in the show, after the Angel Gabe has appeared to Mary to tell her she's about to have a baby... and she decides that yes, she will follow the plan. Hope you enjoy. ~Nick

Bring In Da Noize, Bring In Da Funk

Yo, boys and girls! Can't believe we've got less than a month to opening night. Scary - but tremendously exciting as well! Things certainly are heating up - the choreography is intensifying, and as of this week we've begun work with the band. A couple of weeks of rehearsing with the musicians and we'll be integrating them with the cast. By the third week of November, fingerz crossed, we'll be seeing the incorporation of acting, singing and movement, all at the same time (in a musical?! Get out of town)!!

Here's a shout-out to the band members whom I've been rehearsing with so far, Ryan, Isaac, Ming and Joe, who've been rockin' it with their electric guitars and drums and bass. We've still got a second keyboard coming in shortly - yours truly will be on first keyboard, even during the performances - so once that happens, it's going to sound pretty awesome!!

I leave you now with this murky audio clip of our rehearsal earlier today. It's not the best audio - it's basically a microphone plugged into the computer - but the point of this clip is not just to demonstrate the band's adeptness at handling challenging rhythms from the get-go (the bulk of this section being in 7/8), but also to demonstrate... well... the kind of volume my neighbours have to put up with, arf! Yup, we're rehearsing in a residential area. In a condo, to be more specific. So far, so good... though I suspect that having blogged about this, I've jinxed our chances of getting away with it!! :P

Check back in again soon for more cast bios and stuff, y'hear?
